Mother Nature
2023-2024 Wet Season
I watched the wretched dust blow
Invading every nook and cranny
Wiping it away daily, time creeping slow
A feeling settled over me, quite uncanny
The heat became oppressive
As lightning tongued across the plains
The sound of crackling fire destructive & aggressive
Choking on smoke with stinging eyes I prayed for the rains
If you looked down on us from above
Over half the place was black
By the end it was no longer a labor of love
Everyone was keen to get the fire bugs back on the rack
Driving over bare earth, sweat sliding down my cheek
I cranked the bore over and watched as it spat to life
Roos hanging about, they’d become quite wise, no water in the creek
Like the cattle, knowing if they stray too far, they will be in strife
After dust storms and fire the welcome sound of rain is a relief
I dance and wait for the country to come alive
Little did I know soon i’d be in disbelief
As the rain just kept coming, the country began to thrive
We’ve battled snakes and floods
An eagle even tried to steal my dog
Everything is covered in mud
and I find myself sick of being water logged!
For we haven’t been able to drive to town
In a couple of months or more
And with the alcohol dried up spirits are slightly down
I don’t think anyone can handle another garden chore!
I’m not one to feel down trodden
But this last 6 months has been rough
From burning up to being thoroughly sodden
Mother Nature will test you even if your tough
I like to think I’ve kept my sense of humour
When everything's breaking down, falling apart or needs a solution
Unhappiness can grow like a tumour
But I’ve kept up my daily constitution
I’ve learnt so many lessons
I’ve got experiences to last all my days
Most importantly the least important is your possessions
Life is a gift if you accept it in all its different ways
Mother Nature my greatest teacher
The weather is my preacher.
